Serendipity and Serenity.

Many many years ago I went on a first date with a young lady that would be my girlfriend for the next two and a half years. It was in the fall and the movie was a sci-fi film. Many of the same faces that were at Serenity tonight were there then too.

Coincidence? Something to ponder.

Speaking of Serentiy if you haven't seen the film and are a fan of the series stop reading. If you haven't seen the film and might go see it and don't want it spoiled stop reading. If you have seen it or have no earthly reason in seeing and for some reason are still reading feel free to press on.

1. WHY DID THEY KILL WASH?!?!

Shepard Book dying I could deal with, not well but I could deal. That's an old archetype. The priest with a past who has now found peace. I get that. Wash, I suspect, was just a victim of Joss' style. The suprise that you didn't expect. Even after knowing this from his other series (never a die hard fan of Buffy or Angel but certainly I've seen my share of them) Wash's death cut me to the quick. I suspect it appeals to the notion of somone you care for being cut down in their prime without explaination. It makes it more real, just as we all know someone who has gone before they should have, to our minds anyway. At least he died doing what he loved and saved his friends. Perhaps it's a little silly to care about a fictional character but we invest ourselves in the characters in the movies we see, the shows we watch and the books we read. It's no worse than people who watch soap operas. Except he's not coming back. Already, watching the episodes has changed for me. When talking with friends we're speaking in the past tense. It's a shame. He was a good character and Alan Tudyk played him well.

2. What was Mal's sin? Pride, Avarice, Envy, Wrath, Lust, Gluttony and Sloth. Standing in opposite to Humility, Generosity, Love, Kindness, Self Control, Faith and Zeal. Mal gives the answer "Wrath" which I think is probably it. Wrath and anger against the Alliance. He has pride and avarice but if anything he exhibits generosity, kindness, self control, temperance (faith) and zeal in every other aspect of his character. As to love, well, Mal touches on that in the end and I think that's enough said on that topic.

In the end, even though characters that I enjoyed were lost I'm not angry the way I was seeing the Enterprise explode or after watching each and every one of the Star Wars Prequels. It was a great movie. A great ride. If Joss Whedon doesn't succeed off this film and make more of this series then the world truly is unjust.

Back to the other. Serendipity and coincidence...what will come of it all?

Who can say?

That is all.

Passive/Aggressive Hatred.

Without exception everyone has been in the following situation: A friend is dating a truly horrid person. No one in your social group likes this person, a few cannot even stand them. Collectively, you are waiting for this couple to break up so you can tell them what a bitch/bastard that person was and how your friend should never, ever date someone like that again.

Of course some times your friend marries that person. Well, unless you say something before the wedding you're screwed. Out one friend effectively, though you keep in tacit contact. Usually.

Other times one of them moves far far away. In which case you're just waiting to hear how someone, inevitably, was cheated on by the other.

This seems to be a fairly common theme in human interaction, hence, my mentioning it. At least three friends from various social groups I interact with are experiencing this phenomena. One of them very soon *cough* tomorrow *cough*.

Wouldn't it be easier if we just said "Hey, s/he is an ass. End it."?

That is all.

Running on reserves but running strong.

Sleep has been good lately. Though last night I was up late. I feel good though, sometimes it's healthy to run on your reserves. Plus, I know I'll sleep well tonight.

Lately my thoughts have drifted to my various romantic entaglements. It's been interesting revisiting all the little quirks, the habits, the flaws. Drawing commonalities and differences between the various women. Glad that none of them resemble my mother too closely. :-) There are regrets (why did I put so much effort into that one?). There are reliefs (thank the heavens that one didn't work out!).

Why? Fall's coming. That's my favorite time of year. Almost all of my serious relationships have begun in the Fall.

On a separate notion, I've been going blind on reading lately. Work alternates between slow and lightspeed.

Serenity opens this week. That I'm looking forward to very much. I don't dress up for that stuff though.

Speaking of which, Halloween is just around the corner! And then, of course, Guy Fawkes Day.

Summer's at an end, the weather's turning. Things are going to happen soon.

What's more fun than anticipation of the unknown?

Probably women in sexy lingerie.

That is all.

Deprivation

The fragility of the human mind is an odd thing. Much like an egg shell. Put pressure on it one way and it is amazingly sturdy; holding a burden that seems almost unbelievable. However, put pressure on it another way and it pierces like tissue paper.

I've been going through a small bout of insomnia lately which follows a long bout of very restful nights. Going to bed earlier and earlier each night in an effort to get some rest. I'm not even close to cracking. But a year ago...

Last year I had severe tonsillitis which, eventually, ended up in the removal of said tonsils. I contracted it while on a business trip. My throat swelled, as did the glands in my neck. Breathing was difficult, my neck was stiff and I could not sleep. Not at all. I would get maybe 20 min of sleep a night, some nights none at all. This went on for about a month. You cannot imagine, you cannot even concieve what this does to you or your mind. You go insane. You hear voices. You see things that don't exist. You are not safe. You pose a very real threat to yourself and those around you. You lose the ablility to be rational and that takes away your ability to seek help for your problem.

The only reason I could focus at all was because of the pain in my throat and neck. Having a specific souce of difficulty to focus on allowed me to, in some small way, address the problem. Fortunately, for me, a co-worker was able to recommend a group of doctors to help me. Thanks to their care I'm doing much better. Life has returned to normal and while that doesn't seem like much it is everything when you are in pain.

In my everyday life I joke about a lot of things. And because I treat most things lightly people tend not to realize when I'm not joking. On this topic I could not be more serious. I know how close I came to going over the edge. I was there, and I was looking down. So now this minor bout of insomnia doesn't bother me much. Yes, I'm tired and I'd like to sleep but I know it's going to be alright.

All the same, a nap wouldn't suck.

That is all.
