This is my favorite photo of Nikki. She visited recently (like in the last 3 months :-) and was quite tired when she arrived. She needed some time to let her body adjust (flying from CA on the red-eye will do that to you as I recently learned). But of all the photos I've taken or have of her (hey, it's not like that! Get your mind out of the gutter! OUT! GUTTER! NOW!) this is my very favorite. Why? Well, this is my apartment. My couch, my blanket, my pillows. Even though she's been here before nothing here is hers but the clothes on her back (and, obviously, in her luggage). But she's asleep and, to my eye, seems happy.
Now I'm one of those people who can sleep pretty much anywhere at anytime. But I don't think I share the look of contentment on her face when I do. I think it's possibly one of the greatest signs of trust I can imagine to look that content, asleep, in a setting that is unfamiliar. My heart warms with that thought.
I'm going to miss her.
Funny the things that bring us together and tear us apart in this world. You can do one stupid thing, say one unkind word and unravel months or years of love and affection. A cliche to be true but it is easier to destroy than to create (and I would add to preserve) something beautiful.
Fragile things our lives and our relationships. Does that make them all the more precious or is that notion simply to naive?
You can do or say something stupid. Something you never meant. You can react badly just once and ruin something special. Something worth having and building.
I look at this picture and think. I think if she could be that comfortable here then that must be evidence of a thread of value which, maybe, maybe, can or is preserved despite foolish word or action. And that brings hope. And hope eases my soul and lets me rest. Would that I look that way tonight when I sleep with the hope of that notion alive in me.
That is all.
Post Script: This log was written a few days ago and not published for personal reasons. I would like to note, however, to any and all parties interested that the POSTING of this particular log has COST me some hours sleep THIS evening due to someone BUSTING MY BALLS. Not that I'm mentioning any names *cough* STRAWBERRY *cough* TIA x 2.
