Don't Heckle The Supervillain

SP2 or I'm sure Microsoft won't screw up my computer this time...d'oh!

As you may or may not be aware, Microsoft released the new Service Pack Two for XP. Lucky for me I have my update settings adjusted so that I download the newest critical updates but it's up to me to install them, this way I can only blame myself.

So what happened? I got screwed that's what happened. Once installed and rebooted my system came up but no internet connection. Joy! The local area connection showed an error stating there was "limited or no connectivity". Networking, why did it have to be networking? I hate networking. So I turned of the windows firewall in favor of my zone alarm and rebooted. Problem persists. Then I take a look at the settings for my PPPoE dialer, and lo and behold the problem appears. The option to connect to a broadband service using a user name and password option is greyed out. I've seen this problem before and fortunately, after looking through some old papers, I found the fix. I post it here as informational only. If you try this it's of your own accord and I'm not responsible for the results.

Open your registry editor (if you don't know how to open your registry editor then you should NOT be trying to do this!).

Navigate to:

HKey Local Machine
System
Current Control Set
Services
RASMAN
PPP
EAP

Under EAP delete keys: 4, 13, 25, 26 and possibly any others.

Reboot.

I cannot stress enough that you should ONLY do this if when you use the new connection wizard you are unable to select the option "connect to the internet using a broadband connection that requires a user name or password" after trying to manually set up your internet connection. If you don't understand that sentence then again YOU SHOULD NOT BE ATTEMPTING THIS!
